The fall months are the perfect time of year to do this. Most households use far more hot water during the winter than any other time of the year. If that sediment is allowed to sit in the bottom of the tank for too long, it can cause corrosion to happen much sooner.
How to Tell if Water Heater Anode Rod is Bad
Some people don’t realize that the anode rod on your water heater isn’t a permanent fixture. It is a rod made of magnesium, zinc or aluminum with a steel core. While they are temporary, they place an important role of making sure your water tank doesn’t rust. This is why you need to be inspecting the anode rod on a regular basis. If there is any sign of corrosion, it needs to be replaced to avoid damage. Most people can get around 3-5 years out of their anode rod before they need to replace it. Because things can happen and it can corrode sooner, you should be inspecting it regularly to ensure it isn’t showing signs of corrosion yet.
Adjust Temperature on Water Heater
Have you noticed how much easier it is to get hot water out of your faucet during the summer months? When the temperature outside is warmer, your water heater doesn’t have to work as hard to heat the water. As the temperature drops, you will likely have to turn up the temperature on your water heater to ensure you get the hot water that you need.
